ABOUT THE NORTH AMERICAN BEAR COMPANYIn the mid-1970s, Barbara Isenberg, a young mother and design student, decided she wanted to start her own toy company. Barbara wanted to design and produce imaginative teddy bears of superior quality that would appeal to both children and adults. And, she wanted her teddy bears to retain the nostalgic charm of antique toys. She asked her friend, fashion designer Odl Bauer, to help her. She asked him to make a bear out of an old sweatshirt, a bear that would be extra soft and cuddly and different from anything else on the market. That first bear evolved into Albert the Running Bear, a classic bear in a colorful running suit. A few years later, she had developed several sample bear designs that satisfied her, and she was ready to go into production. She hired a sales force and located a small factory space in New York City to manufacture her bears. Barbara's brother Paul Levy joined her and they formed the North American Bear Company, Inc. A year after the debut of Albert the Running Bear, the company introduced a new line of bears known as the VIB line (dressed velour bears with punned names). These were followed by the VanderBear Family in 1983 and Muffy VanderBear in in 1984. Since those beginnings, the North American Bear Company has diversified into a full range of plush toys, each with its own look and name. The company also produces accessories, greeting cards, paper products and a full line of infant plush. Distribution is global. Today, Barbara Isenberg heads the New York Studio where all of the products are created by an in-house team of designers and artists. Barbara's brother Paul Levy has primary responsibility for company finance, sales and warehouses which are located in Chicago. Internet
